KenPom Weekly Movers: Northwestern Falling, Princeton Rising

BracketBusters helped teams move up and down the rankings this week. Note: I’m using data Sunday through Sunday because I was a day late. (Put your spreadsheets in the cloud!)

Top 5 Weekly Movers This Week:

  1. Vanderbilt: +39 (87)
  2. Penn St.: +32 (166)
  3. Marist: +27 (240)
  4. Princeton: +26 (76)
  5. Drake: +21 (131)
  6. Hawaii: +21 (187)
  7. Arkansas-Pine Bluff: +21 (285)
  8. Evansville: +21 (98)

The Commodores made a jump in the standings this week thanks to a close loss to Kentucky and a huge blowout of Mississippi St. The 41-point loss is why the Bulldogs are on the biggest fallers. Also, I think this is a great way to express how well Princeton played during its weekend at Columbia and Cornell. The Tigers made the Ivy League into a two-team race with Harvard thanks to two big wins and rocketed up the rankings.

Top 5 Weekly Fallers This Week:

  1. Northwestern: -51 (136)
  2. VMI: -38 (299)
  3. Mississippi St.: -31 (272)
  4. SE Louisiana: -24 (288)
  5. Auburn: -23 (174)
  6. Northwestern St.: -23 (150)

Northwestern has lose its last three games by a combined 80 points, which is why the Wildcats have fallen so far. I dropped NU out of my NIT bracketology because the ugly losses keep mounting. Marist crushed VMI, which is how they ended up this far down.

Top 5 Movers This Season:

  1. Utah: +181 (128)
  2. Eastern Kentucky: +178 (114)
  3. Southern: +168 (164)
  4. Towson: +166 (172)
  5. Canisius: +165 (111)

Top 5 Fallers This Season:

  1. North Texas: -144 (251)
  2. Old Dominion: -134 (266)
  3. Cleveland St.: -130 (238)
  4. SC Upstate: -129 (226)
  5. Marshall: -129 (222)

Penn State’s big week helped the Nittany Lions escape this list for one of the first times all season. Also escaping? Drexel. Watch out for Mississippi St. The Bulldogs are crashing down the rankings and could end up on this list by the end of the season.

Conference Update:

America East has jumped up to the top spot in the conference rankings in terms of the biggest movement. The teams rose an average of six spots last week and 35 on the season. The Atlantic Sun is solidly at the bottom of the list still. The biggest weekly mover? The MAAC. The entire conference out-performed during BracketBusters. Their 7-3 record helped rise all boats this past week.
